2014 Oscar Predictions

So, I'm jumping on a bandwagon.

*Hop*

I've never done this before, but as I've blogged about movies WAY too much this week (and we're having our second Pick-A-Movie Night with our high school students), here are my predictions for this year's Academy Award winners.

I've predicted what will win (my prediction for the actual winner come Sunday), could win (strong contenders), and should win (my personal choice, regardless of nomination) for the major categories:

Best Picture
Will win: 12 Years a Slave
Could win: Gravity
Should win: Before Midnight

Best Director
Will win: Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity)
Could win: Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave)
Should win: Shane Carruth (Upstream Color)

Best Actor
Will win: Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)
Could win: Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)
Should win: Paul Eenhoorn (This Is Martin Bonner)

Best Actress
Will win: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
Could win: Amy Adams (American Hustle)
Should win: Brie Larson (Short Term 12)

Best Supporting Actor
Will win: Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)
Could win: Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave)
Should win: Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips)

Best Supporting Actress
Will win: Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave)
Could win: Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle)
Should win: Scarlett Johannson (Her)

Best Original Screenplay
Will win: Her
Could win: American Hustle
Should win: Short Term 12

Best Adapted Screenplay
Will win: 12 Years a Slave
Could win: The Wolf of Wall Street
Should win: Before Midnight

Best Foreign Language Film (note: I saw only one foreign language film from 2013. Sad, I know.)
Will win: The Great Beauty
Could win: The Hunt
Should win: ???

Best Animated Film
Will win: Frozen
Could win: The Wind Rises
Should win: Monsters University

Best Documentary (note: I haven't seen a single 2013 documentary, so this is complete conjecture)
Will win: The Act of Killing
Could win: The Square
Should win: ???

Confession: I admit that the Academy Awards are all politics and hooplah, and rarely do the actual best films of the year win the awards, let alone receive nominations. Often my favourite film from a particular year wasn't even nominated for Best Picture. However, I can appreciate a ceremony where many of the lesser-known craftspeople doing the hark work of filmmaking get recognized and publicly thanked.

So, I'll be watching the Oscars this Sunday in the company of fellow movie-lovers, hoping to point them to some of the lesser-seen filmic treasures that may have slipped past them, while also appreciating the joy of being in community with people who love Jesus and love movies.

Will you be watching the Oscars this Sunday? What are you predictions? Share 'em in the comments or link to your own blog post of predictions.

  1. You were incredibly accurate! Well done! Some years ago I decided to memorise the Oscar winners in the top four categories as a way of holding off senility... it's good fun and has come in handy on quiz nights etc.
Love your blog; cheers from the Anglican Church in Brisbane, Australia.
