Upside Down

Escher-like photography from Erik Johansson
First, watch this 3-minute video of a speed painter on Anderson Cooper's show (Click here if you can't see the embed below):

I love the faces of the panel of judges. They look so confused and underwhelmed by the painter's performance, but it's the final unexpected moment that turns their confusion on its head.

Hmmm...what is happening here...I don't get it...uh...okay....okay.........AHA! I see it now! It was there all along.

So it is with the kingdom of God.

It's here, alive and well in our world. It's not fully here, not yet, anyway. But the good news Jesus shared during His ministry on earth was that the kingdom of God was at hand. This kingdom wasn't what anyone expected. It didn't fit a paradigm that anyone held. It still doesn't make a whole lot of sense, actually. A new reality, a new way of being in the world, a better way to live that is defined by being the least and lowliest. Jesus turned the world upside down through His saving grace.

A change in perspective makes all the difference.

Think of your family. Your ministry. Your marriage. Your friendships. Your daily habits. Your desires and dreams. Your fears and anxieties.

What do you need to turn upside down to see it differently? Flip it around and see it with a new perspective. If you're discouraged, what is encouraging? If you're confused, what still makes sense? If you're afraid, what gives you peace? If you feel alone, who is still with you? How does this situation/relationship/whatever look in the light of the kingdom of God?
